The Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of the Olivier Award-winning Hitchcockian thriller The 39 Steps arrives on Broadway Jan. 4 at the American Airlines Theatre. The previews start today with the official opening night on January 15!
This is Jennifer Ferrin’s debut on Broadway and what a great way to start! She has a major role in a play that is getting terrific buzz as one of the hot plays for 2008! It has been hugely successful in London, won an Olivier Award, similar to our Tony, and had a very successful run in Boston during the fall.
If you get a chance to go, be sure to do that! Don’t wait too long as it is a limited engagement until March 23. And if you do get a chance to go, please post here about what you thought about the play. Please spread the word!
The picture here is from the Boston production and is Jennifer along with Charles Edwards, who was also in the London production and is courtesy of Charles Erickson and the Huntington Theatre.
The 39 Steps was originally presented onstage by North Country Theatre in April 1996 at the Georgian Theatre, Richmond, North Yorkshire. The show played London’s Tricycle Theatre in 2006 and then transferred to the West End’s Criterion Theatre and earned the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.
Tickets to The 39 Steps at the American Airlines Theatre, 227 West 42nd Street, are available by calling (212) 719-1300 or by visiting roundabouttheatre.org.

And where else would it be served but at the Penthouse bar in the lobby of the American Airlines Theater. The bar opens one hour prior to curtain and that may be a good thing since as you would guess, there are 39 steps to making the drink. The information comes from New York Magazine and you can find more information HERE. If you would like to try one at home, here’s how you make it:
THE COCKTAIL
The 39 Steps
Inspired by the show and created in—you guessed it—39 steps.
1.5 oz Absolut Citron
.5 oz Pimm’s No. 1
splash of cranberry juice
lemonade
lemon and lime wedges
1. Grab a lemon
2. Pick up a knife
3. Cut a wedge of lemon and set aside
4. Grab a lime
5. Cut a wedge of lime and set aside
6. Set knife back down on counter
7. Get a large glass to mix drink in (and drink out of!)
8. Take out ice scoop
9. Scoop up some ice
10. Drop ice into cup
11. Put ice scoop back
12. Retrieve Absolut Citron bottle
13. Find 2 measuring shot glasses
14. Pour 1.5 oz Absolut into first shot glass
15. Return Absolut bottle
16. Retrieve Pimm’s No. 1 bottle
17. Pour 1.5 oz Pimm’s into the other shot glass
18. Pour both Absolut and Pimm’s shots into large drinking glass
19. Pick up cranberry juice
20. Unscrew cranberry juice lid
21. Pour a splash of cranberry juice into glass
22. Set juice bottle back on counter
23. Replace lid to cranberry juice bottle
24. Return cranberry juice bottle to fridge
25. Grab a pitcher of lemonade (homemade, store bought, whatever you’ve got)
26. Pour a generous splash of lemonade into glass
27. Still holding lemonade with one hand, take out a bar spoon
28. Lower bar spoon to glass
29. Stir drink with bar spoon in a swirling motion
30. Top off glass with another splash of lemonade
31. Return lemonade
32. Return bar spoon to original location
33. Obtain bar tongs
34. Pick up lemon wedge with bar tong
35. Place lemon on rim of glass (you may use your fingers here—tongs can be tricky)
36. Pick up lime with bar tong
37. Place lime on rim of glass (ditto for the lime)
38. Return bar tongs to bar top
39. Hand drink to guest
Like any good whodunit, there are plenty of twists and turns, but for those of you in a hurry, the express recipe is as follows:
1. Mix liquid ingredients in glass over ice.
2. Stir.
3. Top off with a splash of lemonade.
4. Garnish with lemon and lime wedges

The Roundabout Theatre Company Presents
Alfred Hitchcock’s
The 39 Steps

Based on the book by John Buchan
With Arnie Burton, Charles Edwards, Jennifer Ferrin, Cliff Saunders

Mix an Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of vintage Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a hilarious whodunit, part espionage thriller and part slapstick comedy, adapted for the stage from the famous film and novel. Shots ring out across a crowded theatre and Richard Hannay is lured into a world of intrigue by a mysterious woman claiming to be a spy. When she winds up dead in his flat, he flees London with the police hot on his trail. A runaway hit in London and the winner of the 2007 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, this tongue-in-cheek thriller features four actors taking on more than 150 roles.
On January 4, 2008 Jennifer’s dream of being on the Broadway stage becomes a reality. Currently in rehearsal, the play will start in previews on January 4, with a sold-out opening night of January 15, 2008. The limited engagement will run until March 23, 2008 at the American Airlines Theater.
The play had a very successful run in Boston at the Huntington Theatre in the fall of 2007. For more information on that and to read some of the wonderful reviews check The 39 Steps Boston page. You will also find photos and a rehearsal video.
Hopefully the play will continue it’s great success and be a huge hit for Jennifer. If you saw it in Boston or get a chance to see it on Broadway, please post your comments here for Jennifer’s other fans to see!

With Jennifer appearing in the theatrical production of The 39 Steps, I became curious as to just what the story was. I thought some of you might be curious too, so here are some ways to find out more about it.
In October 2007, Reel Classic Films released the classic Alfred Hitchcock film, originally filmed in 1935 on DVD. It is available for purchase from Amazon. There have been other versions of the film done but I am told the 1935 original was the best.
The 39 Steps Summary:
This classic British thriller was one of Alfred Hitchcock’s first major international successes, and it introduced a number of the stylistic and thematic elements that became hallmarks of his later work. Richard Hannay (Robert Donat), a Canadian rancher on vacation in England, attends a music hall performance by “Mr. Memory” (Wylie Watson); in the midst of the show, shots ring out and Richard flees the theater. Moments later, a terrified woman (Lucie Mannheim) begs Richard to help her; back at his room, she tells him that she’s a British spy whose life has been threatened by international agents waiting outside. Richard is certain that she’s mad until she reappears at his door in the morning, near death with a knife in her back, a map in her hand, and muttering something about “39 Steps.” Discovering that a group of thugs are indeed waiting outside, Richard slips away and takes the first train to the Scottish town on the dead woman’s map. Richard learns that he’s now wanted by the police for murder, and he must find a way to clear his name. He begins trying to do so with the help of a woman he meets en route, Pamela (Madeleine Carroll), who serves as his unwitting assistant, even after she tries to turn him in. The 39 Steps was later remade in 1959 and 1978 — both without Hitchcock’s participation.
The book written by John Buchan is also available at Amazon. The movie changed quite a bit from the book so it is still an enjoyable read even if you have seen the movie. Unfortunately I haven’t seen the play to be able to say whether it holds truer to the movie or the book or a combination of both.

First I have to apologize for being so bad about blogging! Life and computer problems just get in the way sometimes. And so many great things have been happening for Jennifer!
The complete series of The Kill Point will be out on DVD on March 4, 2008. It is now available for pre-order at Amazon. They have had the episodes available for download, but now you can get the series on DVD.
If you didn’t watch this I highly recommend it! Jennifer was terrific in it, but I really enjoyed the show itself and am disappointed that Spike TV won’t be doing another season of it.
The cast was outstanding! I happen to think Jennifer got the best female role. You couldn’t help but feel some sympathy for the bank robbers because the actors made the characters so intriguing, especially “Mr. Wolf” played by Jon Leguizamo. And who would fault Jennifer’s character “Chloe” for developing Stockholm Syndrome and falling for him. I think I did too! The action was fast-paced and intense and really drew me in. The only weak spot for me was when the female FBI agent came in and took over for Cali, but fortunately that was just the one show and he was back in charge. While I always knew the good guys would win, there was still a twist at then end that caught me by surprise. I didn’t want the show to end, yet at the same time for the type of show it was, I think it lasted just the correct length of time.
So if you haven’t seen it, I recommend it and if you did see it, it’s worth seeing again. It’s also great to see Jennifer in a different type of role and she was excellent.
If you saw it already, please add your comments to the blog and let others know what you thought!

Yahoo! TV now has the first act of “The Kill Point” pilot online! They also have episode information, cast information, photos and some other fun stuff there. Definitely worthwhile to check it out!
I watched the clip of the pilot and I’m hooked already! No time is wasted and it gets right into the action. It’s very intense! A lot is happening right at the beginning and it’s not something to just casually view! I was drawn right into the action and it looks like it should keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. I want to know what happens next! And of course it was fun to spot Jennifer right from the beginning! Definitely go check it out! And spread the word for everyone to watch on Sunday night!

The reviews have started for the premiere of “The Kill Point” and there are some terrific comments!
Be sure to check out the current TV Guide for July 16 - 22, where Matt Roush gives it a 9 out of 10! He says: ‘With echoes of Tarantino and “Dog Day Afternoon.” this tough, unusually well-cast eight- hour “event” series is an instantly gripping winner.’
Hal Boedecker of the Orlando Sentinel says: ‘ “The Kill Point” has such a powerful twist that you probably don’t want to read a lot about it. But I want to alert you to its power………..You won’t want to pick apart “The Kill Point.” Just mark your calendar and watch. It offers solid drama.’
Blogcritics Magazine is saying: “Great acting, particularly on the part of Leguizamo, is sure to make The Kill Point one popular summer series. I already can’t wait to see what happens next.”
Please keep checking JenniferFerrin.net for more Kill Point Reviews. And be sure to come post your thoughts after it airs!

Also Spike TV has now setup a fantastic page on their website for The Kill Point. They have the trailer online as well as some other great videos and interviews. They have some terrific photos and be sure to check out the last one of some of the hostages being guarded and you will spot Jennifer sitting on a couch.
The Channel Guide Magazine has an article in their July issue as well as online. If you haven’t read The Kill Point Countdown Blog yet, be sure to do that for some great interviews.
The reviews are just starting and there is a great early review of the pilot at Blogcritics.org.

There is a new trailer now online for “The Kill Point.” Finally we have a Jennifer Ferrin sighting. It goes by pretty fast but she’s definitely shown. Check out the picture at the left so you know what to watch for. She appears about 3/4 of the way into it in the segment titled Murder. And contrary to what had been posted on a soap opera message board, no she is not a blonde in this! So far from the trailer, it looks like this is an action packed and intense show. I’m anxious for it to start! View “The Kill Point” trailer.
There is also another edition of “The Kill Point” Countdown from The Channel Guide Magazine online now. It’s a fun read with some great photos. Be sure to check out the photo taken from the bank loft and you’ll spot Jennifer in the lower right hand side!
